Emergencies

If you have an urgent sexual health problem, there are a number of options for accessing care.

If you are dealing with any of the below, you can walk into most axess clinics during their respective opening times:

  • I have painful genital ulcers (or require repeat medication for this)
  • I have pelvic pain
  • I need emergency contraception
  • I have had condomless sex in the last 72 hours, with someone at high risk of HIV and may require PEP
  • I am currently taking PEP
  • I require syphilis treatment
  • I have been sexually assaulted
  • I am 16 or younger
  • I have been diagnosed with an STI and require treatment
  • I have a pain in my testicles
  • I have IUD/S problems (including pain, bleeding, or lost threads)
  • I am having problems with my implant (including pain, redness, swelling oozing, or unable to feel implant)

If we are closed and you have an urgent problem you have a number of options. Don't forget you can order postal testing kits at any time by visiting here.

Emergency contraception

If you have had condomless sex and need emergency contraception, you can walk into most axess clinics under the urgent criteria or find your local pharmacy here. Check your local axess clinic open hours for availability of walk-in clinics here.

If axess is closed, emergency contraception is also available from GPs, NHS walk-in centres and A&E departments - although there may be long waiting times.

PLEASE NOTE: Not all pharmacies offer emergency contraception for free so we advise that you call first to find out.

Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)

If you think you have been exposed to HIV within the last 72hrs don’t wait for us to be open, go straight to A&E. The sooner you start taking it the more likely it is to prevent HIV.

For more information on PEP please visit the Terrence Higgins Trust Website here
